Medical Assistant for Mohs Surgeon Mosher Center for Skin Cancer Care | Wellesley Hills, MA

Jan. 31, 2025

Application Deadline February 15

Description

This position is intended for motivated, curious, dynamic students who want to develop the skills necessary for successful application to medical school and as a future surgeon. Our program is tough but tougher to beat in terms of positioning you for the future you envision! Our graduates have been admitted to Stanford, Dartmouth, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Penn, USC, Pitt, UMass for medical school.

We are looking for students who always go above and beyond—and who seriously intend to pursue a career in surgery. Our curriculum offers intense, in-depth preparation for medical school clerkships and early years of residency. Our graduates consistently reach out to us once they begin their clinical rotations to tell us they were light years ahead of their peers on the wards and matched into better surgical residencies because of it!

Disclaimer

To ensure the optimal fit for this intellectually challenging and demanding position, we’re seeking exceptionally strong candidates with a steadfast commitment to surgery and who can commit to up to 11 hour surgical days, balanced with lighter administrative days. Our experience has shown that individuals truly passionate about the surgical field are not only the best match for this role but also stand to gain the most in terms of rewarding clinical and research experiences and in-depth knowledge during their tenure with us. This preference stems from our extensive history with gap year students, highlighting the need for genuine interest and dedication in prospective candidates. Therefore, please do not apply if surgery is not your committed medical field.

Applicant Qualities we seek

  • curious and excited to learn in a scientifically engaging and high-stakes, fast-paced surgical environment
  • confident, demonstrating academic aptitude, emotional intelligence, situational awareness, and conscientiousness
  • self-driven and independent, able to predict needs before they arise, to think multiple steps ahead, and to complete future tasks in advance while balancing current responsibilities
  • resilient, receptive to feedback, and quick to adjust to changing circumstances
  • detail-oriented yet efficient, prioritizing critical tasks at hand and completing them to the best of their ability while balancing needs for both quality and productivity
  • willing to change course and to respond to questions or instructions at short notice
  • a natural multitasker, able to manage several simultaneous responsibilities while interacting with patients and colleagues effectively
  • a clear, direct communicator, oftentimes utilizing shorthand in order to provide only necessary information in the operating room
  • willing to go above and beyond to support our team, with our ultimate goal in mind: providing the best care possible

Our ideal applicant does NOT

  • require considerable praise and/or reassurance
  • succomb to performance anxiety and perfectionistic tendencies in high stress situations (eg putting one's own need for perfectionism and reassurance ahead of the task at hand). We appreciate attention to detail, but not when it prevents a team member from accomplishing a task at hand in a timely fashion.
  • crack under pressures inherent to high-stress environments such as an operating room or a busy surgical floor
  • focus solely on the ‘trees’ and not on the ‘forest’
  • lack ability to admit to mistakes

Details

We are seeking recent college graduates who wish to gain exposure to a surgical subspecialty for 1 to 2 years, starting in June of 2024. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to): scheduling surgeries, arranging prescriptions, labs, and pathology reports, preparing biopsies, performing pre-operative telephone evaluations, completing medical histories and surgical documentation, rooming and discharging patients, performing bandage changes and suture removals, circulating in surgical suites, and assisting in procedures.

You will develop an outstanding repertoire of surgical experience. You’ll learn to think on your feet, to anticipate needs before they arise, and to provide superior clinical care. Our gap year students enter medical school with an unparalleled amount of advanced clinical knowledge, not only in dermatology or in surgery, but also in how to best contribute to the healthcare team.
