The research laboratory of Jessica Tyler is a collaborative environment that focuses on discovery of the molecular mechanisms of lifespan extension and maintenance of genomic integrity. We seek to discover the molecular basis of aging and leverage this to understand how anti-aging regimens, including calorie restriction, extend lifespan in eukaryotic organisms including humans, using budding yeast as a model system to gain insight into the fundamentally conserved mechanisms at play. Our research also uncovers how conserved mechanisms maintain genomic integrity to protect from disease, including analyses of novel Tardigrade proteins that confer protection of the genome from DNA damage via epigenetic mechanisms. More information about the lab’s research can be found by visiting their website at jesstylerlab.info.

About the Research Assistant role:
You are a curious, hard-working individual with demonstrated skills in molecular biology/cell biology, have a strong eye for detail, an eagerness to learn new techniques, a collaborative approach to scientific discovery, and a genuine passion for biology. You will perform duties related to many aspects of molecular biology, cell biology, molecular genetics, and general lab management. The team is ideally looking for someone who can commit to work within the lab for at least 2 years.

What we offer:

  • A competitive compensation package with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.
  • The lab has a strong track record of technicians being co-authors on research publications.
  • Flexibility to participate in scientific professional development as much or as little as the chosen candidate desires - Dr. Tyler is a strong, supportive advocate for career development of her team members.

What you'll do:

  • Support duties relating to lab management and operations (ordering, equipment maintenance, general lab upkeep, ensuring compliance with safety regulations) – up to 30%-40% of time as needed.
  • Under the mentorship of a postdoctoral fellow / graduate student, perform molecular biology utilizing yeast molecular genetics and / or mammalian cell culture.
  • Keep meticulous laboratory records and communicate effectively and transparently about experiments.
  • Participate in weekly laboratory meetings and small group research planning meetings.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field is required. The Tyler lab welcomes applications from both recent college graduates and more senior technician candidates. Compensation and job level/title will be commensurate with education, skills, and experience.
  • Previous hands-on independent laboratory research experience in an academic laboratory is required.
  • Knowledge of fundamental principles of molecular genetics and molecular biology gained through coursework and prior independent laboratory research experience is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with standard molecular biology techniques (yeast molecular genetics and / or tissue culture, PCR, microscopy, sub-cloning, etc.) is required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse variety of people at all levels and from all backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong self-motivation with ability to perform complex tasks effectively and independently with general instruction.
  • Eagerness to learn, grow professionally, and be mentored.
  • If you are interested, please email [email protected] with your CV and a description of your career goals.
