Research Assistant, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Med | Boston, MA

Jan. 17, 2025

Overview

The laboratories led by Rameen Beroukhim and Bill Kaelin seek a research assistant to spearhead collaborative, translational projects to find new ways to treat brain cancers. This project is also being led by an experienced MD-PhD physician-scientist who will provide day-to-day mentorship about both experimental and analytic strategies to move the projects forward and career development. Both Drs. Beroukhim and Kaelin are also physician scientists who will provide similar mentorship on a weekly to biweekly basis. The experiments involve a combination of high-throughput functional genomics, descriptive genomics, and work with both cell line and mouse model systems, and are aimed to identify new therapeutic targets in brain cancers that are currently always fatal.

We are looking for a person who will think independently and take ownership of their research projects. We welcome all levels of input from our research technicians, including input on the conduct of experiments but also on new experiments to conduct and new questions to ask. Research technicians in our laboratory regularly present their own work and contribute to the writing of papers and grant applications.

We view a research technician as a mentored training position, with a primary goal being the professional development of our technicians. Prior technicians have successfully pursued a variety of subsequent career directions including obtaining MDs, PhDs, MD-PhDs, and direct entry into industry.

Requirements

The work will be highly translational and potentially span a variety of efforts, including creating new mouse models of disease, generating high-dimensional genomic profiles from patient samples and performing sophisticated molecular biological experiments to test translationally relevant hypotheses. Responsibilities include planning and conducting experiments, data analysis, and communicating results in talks and papers. Our group spans the Departments of Medical Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard Medical School and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, with extensive collaborations across these institutions. The work we do typically requires a full-time presence on-site.

Qualifications

A Bachelors Degree or equivalent is required, preferably in the sciences related to biology, chemistry, physics, or computational methods.  Prior research experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, genomics, or computational biology is preferred. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented in organizational skills, comfortable in a team environment, enthusiastic about scientific discovery, and highly self-motivated.  A minimum two-year commitment is required.

Our laboratory recognizes that achievements are often affected by the circumstances people face. If you have had to overcome significant obstacles, please highlight them so that we can take them into account.
