The Academic Associate Program is a one, but preferably a two-year, full-time, paid program in the Northwell Health’s Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, located only 30 minutes from Manhattan. This position is designed for post-undergraduates who are interested in a career in healthcare and want exposure to clinical research, quality improvement, and/or hospital administration. Cohen Children’s Medical Center’s Pediatric Emergency Department is the busiest pediatric ED and the busiest pediatric trauma center in the tristate area.

Academic Associates (AAs) will be integral members of our team in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, participating in all components of our projects. They will assist faculty with ongoing research projects and work collaboratively with one or more mentors in designing new projects of mutual interest. With the guidance of faculty, AAs will learn to perform chart reviews, administer in-person and online surveys, and analyze primary and secondary data.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Assist in quality and performance improvement projects.
  • Coordinate the Division's yearly Pediatric Emergency Medicine Symposium.
  • Provide administrative and research support for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship.
  • Draft and edit research study manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations. The Division consistently submits annual presentations to the national meetings of the American Association of Pediatrics, Pediatric Academic Societies and the American College of Emergency Physicians, in addition to various other national, regional and local platforms.

Academic Associates will have the added opportunity to participate in the many modalities of medical education that takes place in the division which includes, Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship conference and various clinical educational simulations as well. There will also be opportunities for shadowing of clinicians in the pediatric emergency department. Dr Rocker, the Division Chief, will also lead several personalized educational sessions throughout your time in the position.

Academic Associates will gain a comprehensive perspective on the workings of an academic medical department. AAs often apply to medical school but also go on to pursue other careers in fields such as public health, research, and healthcare administration. Associates gain exposure to many aspects of academic medicine. They work primarily with physicians but also collaborate with other healthcare professionals including administrators, statisticians, nurses, and physician assistants. As a result, academic associates have a strong network of current and past fellows within the larger New York healthcare community.

Program Dates: Start date for the Academic Associate program is somewhat flexible; however, the latest start date is June 24th, 2024. Priority will be given to applicants prepared to make a 2-year commitment, though alternate schedule arrangements will be considered. Interviews will be conducted over Zoom on a rolling basis, but the official deadline is April 26, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST.
