Sanyu Mojola, Princeton University Maurice P. During Professor of Demographic Studies and Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs, will present a talk, “The Power of Place in Shaping Health Outcomes.” This presentation will use the cases of South Africa and the US to illustrate how place shapes health outcomes. Theoretically, the talk will discuss risk environments, syndemic zones, and social containment to think about how place-based factors above and beyond the individual can shape individual health risk and generalized disease vulnerability. This will be followed by historical and contemporary qualitative and quantitative evidence.
Professor Mojola will be joined by Shao-Tzu Yu, a postdoctoral researcher in the Office of Population Research, who will present their joint empirical syndemic zone work.
Lunch will be provided.
