Question of the Week: Full-time Postbac vs. Part-time Classes?

April 25, 2025

Hi HPA – I feel like I need to bring up my GPA for med school, but I don’t know whether I should just take a couple of classes and work, or if I need a full postbac program. How do I decide?

This is such a case-by-case question that it’ll help to have an individual conversation, but some general thoughts:

  • Calculate your overall and science GPA (here’s a google sheet GPA calculator).
  • Compare your GPA to Princeton admission stats and schools of interest (MSAR is your best source for school by school data and is a worthwhile investment 1-2 years prior to applying to med school). Think about how many courses you’re likely to need to reach your goals.
  • Determine priorities around time and money: a cheaper route may take longer vs. a more expensive route that may get you there faster.
  • Think about risk tolerance: a formal program will have a track record of proven success vs. going a non-traditional route where you don’t have that historical data.
  • Consider what’s most likely to bring you academic success: do you feel comfortable navigating your situation more independently, figuring out where you can take the classes, how to get enrolled, etc., or will the structure and guidance provided in a program be important for you?
